Sapphire price: what a blue sapphire is worth per carat

Sapphire value swings enormously with colour, origin and whether the stone is heated. This guide explains the price drivers, then lets you estimate a live per-carat trade range.

What drives sapphire price

Sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby. For blue sapphire, the single biggest lever is colour: a vivid, evenly saturated medium-to-medium-dark blue commands a large premium over pale, inky or greyish stones. After colour come origin, treatment, clarity and size.

Colour

Tone (how light or dark) and saturation (how vivid) matter more than the exact hue. "Royal blue" and Kashmir-type "velvety" blues sit at the top; overly dark or washed-out blues are worth far less per carat.

Origin

Heat treatment

Most sapphire on the market is heated to improve colour and clarity, which is accepted and affordable. An unheated stone with a credible lab report can be worth several times more than the same stone heated — so "undetermined" heat status is the dominant pricing question for fine sapphire.

Clarity & size

Sapphire is a Type II stone — small inclusions are normal and an eye-clean stone is the practical target. Price per carat rises sharply with size for fine material: a 5 ct fine blue is worth far more per carat than five 1 ct stones.

Sapphire price — frequently asked questions

How much is a 1 carat sapphire worth?

It depends almost entirely on colour, origin and heat. A commercial heated blue can be modest, while a 1 ct fine unheated Kashmir or Burmese blue can be many times higher. Use the calculator to estimate a range for your specific stone.

Are unheated sapphires more valuable?

Yes. A natural, unheated sapphire confirmed by a major lab typically commands a substantial premium over an equivalent heated stone, because untreated fine colour is rarer.

Which sapphire origin is most valuable?

Kashmir is the most prized, followed by Burma (Myanmar). Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the high-quality commercial standard, while Madagascar, Thailand and Australia are generally more affordable.

Does colour or size matter more for sapphire price?

Colour first. A vivid, well-saturated blue of modest size usually outvalues a larger pale or overly dark stone on a per-carat basis, though size adds a strong premium once colour is fine.
